I like to pick a word each year to be at the forefront of my mind as a focus, a perspective, a desire reached for and hopefully fulfilled throughout the months, weeks, and days. This year I have chosen the word awaken.
If I truly do serve a triune God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, then I want to be awakened to the worship of all three. I believe I have a biblical understanding how to worship God the Father and God the Son, but I believe I do not have a proper biblical understanding of how to worship God the Spirit, and not just an understanding of how to worship but an understanding of the knowledge of the Spirit.
I think it would be incredible to have Jesus standing right beside me but Jesus himself says that it is good for him to be with the Father (John 16:7). He says that he will not leave us as orphans but will send the Advocate and also return for us one day (John 14:18). If Jesus says it is good for him to leave so that he can send us the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, then I want to understand that "good." I want my soul to be awakened to this reality, this truth, this promise.
So my prayer this year is that my soul will be awakened to the power of the Holy Spirit at work in my life and that I will be awakened to a deeper knowledge of the Spirit's role as a part of our triune God. Here are a few of my specific desires regarding this prayer. As the Counselor, I want to be awakened to his teachings and awakened to remember and recollect these teachings. It is the Spirit who draws people to the gospel and the Spirit who equips with strength needed to accomplish God's purposes in my life; therefore, I want to be awakened to discernment and wisdom, for when to speak and when to hold my tongue in bearing witness about Christ (Mark 13:11; Luke 12:12). I want the Spirit to continually convict me of my sin, and by His power, put to death the desires of the flesh. For it is only by His power, because I cannot get rid of these on my own (John 16:7-11, Romans 8:2). The Spirit brings me life and life in abundance. Where the Spirit is there is no longer any bondage or slavery. By the Spirit, I can abound in hope because of the promises and truths of the Bible, and our God fills us with unspeakable joy (Corinthians 3:17, Romans 15:13). I want to be awakened to the blossoming of the fruit of the Spirit in my life. The fruit of being led by the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control (Galatians 5:22-23). I so want these in my life. I desperately want to be marked by these characteristics. Not for my own glory but for the glory of the Lord. I want to be the fragrance of the aroma of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:15).
More than anything, my prayer this year is to be awakened to a closer and more intimate relationship with Jesus through the drawing of the Spirit (Ephesians 3:16-19). I cannot be awakened to a deeper knowledge, understanding, relationship or power of the Holy Spirit if I am not first awakened to the power of the cross. God, lead me to the foot of the cross, daily. Graciously and gently show me who I am in the shadow of the cross and who you have freed me to be in the light of the cross. Awaken me to a deeper understanding of Jesus' incredible sacrificial love for me and His obedience to Your will.
Holy Spirit as our comforter, our advisor, our encourager, and our strength, Lord please awaken my soul!
